Chapter Two: The Snake on the Wa

Morning burst through the tall windows, chasing shadows across the castle floor and tickling Jenny’s nose until she stirred.

She blinked, stretched, and hopped out of bed; her bare feet cool on the stone tiles. In the hallway, Michael was already dressed, peeking through a heavy curtain.

The garden outside shimmered in golden light.

“Race you downstairs?” Jenny asked.

Michael didn’t answer. He just grinned—and ran.

They dashed through the echoing halls, their laughter bouncing off the old stone. Tall doorways zipped past, old paintings watched in silence, and soon they burst into the great round room at the castle’s heart.

A glass dome soared above them, pouring morning light onto a crescent-shaped sofa and a floor as smooth as river stone.

Jenny flopped down. “This place is huge! It’s like living in a fairy tale.”

Michael turned in a slow circle. “Yeah, but where’s the swimming pool? Every fairy tale needs one.”

They hunted through the garden, ducking past bushes and wandering under fig trees. No pool. No fountain. Just thick greenery, twisted trunks, and flowers that smelled like cinnamon and pepper.

The sun climbed fast and the air thickened.

“Let’s stay inside,” Jenny said. “It’s cooler.”

Back in the hall, a mountain of pillows waited by the sofa—soft, colorful, and oddly shaped. Some were stars. Others looked like animals. Jenny grabbed one shaped like a lion and lobbed it.

“Pillow fight!”

Michael ducked, grabbed a giant blue one, and fired back. Pillows flew. Feathers danced. They laughed until their bellies ached.

Then—

Thump.

One massive pillow soared wide and struck a carved relief on the wall: a golden snake coiled around a ring of stone.

It spun.

Grinding. Shifting.

The snake vanished into the wall.

Silence.

Jenny and Michael froze.

Clunk. Clank. Rattle.

The floor shuddered. A square in the center opened with a groan, revealing a dark stairwell spiraling down into the earth.

Jenny stared. “Did we just open... a secret passage?”

Michael blinked. “I think we did.”

They looked at each other.

Then whispered together, “Let’s go.”

Michael flicked on his phone light. Jenny rummaged in a drawer and lit an old wall torch with a match. The flame hissed to life.

Step by step, they descended.

The air turned cool and damp. The torchlight painted shadows on ancient stone. The noise of the world above faded, replaced by the quiet breath of some-thing forgotten.

At the bottom: a tunnel wide enough for chariots. Smooth. Endless.

“This is... amazing,” Jenny whispered.

“Like something from a dream,” Michael said.

A soft breeze brushed their cheeks. They followed it.

And then—a vast chamber opened before them. The torchlight couldn’t touch its walls. Stone columns rose like trees. Silence hummed in their ears.

In the center stood a pedestal.

On it: a crystal ball. Clear. Huge. Shimmering like starlight.

They stepped closer.

Inside the crystal floated a golden sandal—small and perfect. Its straps curled like snakes, their jeweled heads meeting at the toe.

Jenny’s heart fluttered. She didn’t know why, but she felt... called.

She reached out.

Michael moved too, their hands bumping the glass.

The crystal rolled.

Fell.

Shattered.

Shards scattered like frozen raindrops. The sandal landed gently on the ped-estal.

Then—

Hissssss.

From within the sandal, a golden snake uncoiled and slithered into the light. Its eyes glowed green. It lifted its head.

The children stood still, too breathless to scream.

The snake spoke. Its voice was wind and shadow.

“At last. You have set me free. I have waited a thousand years.”

Jenny could barely breathe.

“You broke the seal,” the golden snake said, its voice curling like smoke.

“Now, I shall grant your greatest wish. Gosh... it’s been ssso long.”

Then it slipped into the dark and was gone.

Silence.

And then—clink. Clatter. The floor beneath them began to rise like a stone elevator. Above, the ceiling peeled open.

Sunlight poured down.

When the platform stopped, they were standing in a wide, glowing pool. Water spilled from golden snake mouths carved into the walls, clear and cool.

Jenny gasped. “Michael... did we make a wish?”

Michael splashed in with a grin. “I think it came true.”

They played until the sky turned orange.

When they returned to the hall, eager to show their parents—

The snake carving was gone.

The floor was whole.

The passage had vanished.

No one believed them.

But in Jenny’s pocket, a piece of the crystal still sparkled.

And in her heart, she knew it was real.
